Quilting and Patchwork

Mother’s Wedding Gift Quilt

by Mary Emma Allen on May 13th, 2005

I remember this quilt from childhood. It lay over the bed in our guest room and wasn’t used daily, only for “company.” Mother told me it had been a wedding gift, in 1934, when she and Father married. Unfortunately I can’t recall who made it or gave it to her. If she ever said, I don’t recall. Perhaps something from the recesses of my mind will come forward someday.

I was thrilled when I saw the quilt in my grown up years, as I cleaned the old farmhouse before it was sold. It had been tucked away in a small storage room, now tattered and torn and well worn. Many of the squares had holes, the batting was sticking out. Mice had chewed it in places.

However, I recognized it immediately and saw the quilt, in my mind, spread across the bed in the guest room, with Mother getting the room ready for my aunt and uncle to visit.

Although Beth and I can’t restore the quilt to it’s original condition, we can salvage pieces and make them into a new quilt or hanging. I’m trying to find fabrics like those used in the quilt to “bring it back to life.”
